Detroit Seniors, We Salute You!

STSS_WEB LOGOWe are excited to kick off the year with our third annual Salute to Senior Service contest! Between now and March 1, 2014, we invite you to nominate a senior volunteer who dedicates at least 15 hours a month to helping others at www.SalutetoSeniorService.com.

Over the last three years, this program has become so important to us because it really highlights how seniors can make a positive difference in their own quality of life by helping others. In fact, about three-fourths of U.S. seniors who volunteer say that staying active through volunteering helps them manage chronic health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, depression, high blood pressure and dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. And 20 percent of seniors who volunteer say that their community service is the most important thing they do.

Because it is so important for seniors to be able to continue to contribute, this year we’ve introduced a new component to the program: free Give Back resources to keep even frail and isolated seniors engaged by volunteering in their communities. You can find them here.

At Home Instead Senior Care serving the Detroit metro, Oakland County, Macomb County, Wayne County, and Southeast Oakland County, we are in constant awe of senior volunteers and the work that they do. Take Helen B., for example. Helen has been volunteering at St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat and Conference Center for 40 years. Her volunteering has spanned many facets, from housekeeping, office work, committee membership on the Board of Directors and Passionist Lay Partners Committee, hospitality greeter and gift shop to Coordinator of the Prayer League Department. In addition to volunteering at St. Paul’s, Helen spends numerous hours at the Detroit, Pro-Literacy center tutoring adults in reading. It is people like this that make Detroit a great community and one we are proud to call home.

We can’t wait to start reading the stories for this year!
