Study Shows Benefits of Home Care

A study commissioned by Home Instead, Inc., shows that their work being done every day in seniors’ homes helps keep some hospital costs from increasing – a significant finding as the nation grapples with skyrocketing health care costs and a booming aging population.

The Home Instead, Inc., Home Office and the study’s author, Frank Lichtenberg, the Courtney C. Brown Professor of Business at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, rolled out the study earlier this month to the media. We want you to know about its important findings and their potential impact on national health care policy at this pivotal time.

Professor Lichtenberg estimates that the nation may have saved as much as $25 billion in total hospital payroll costs in 2008 alone, thanks to the growth of the home health care sector during the previous 10 years. He pointed out that “it is a reasonable calculation” that further savings will be realized in the years ahead if the use of home care continues to grow.

The study also shows that from 1998 to 2008, the mean length of hospital stays declined 4.1 percent. Lichtenberg concluded that the decrease in the length of hospital stays was due to an increase in patients being discharged to home health care.

The Lichtenberg findings confirm that it is less expensive to provide care for the aging in their own homes than in hospital settings. Home care is also more socially desirable. Surveys have found repeatedly that the overwhelming majority of seniors want to age at home as long as possible; they see home-care services as a practical, affordable way to maintain the quality of their lives there.
