Senior “Villages” Are Sprouting Up Around the United States

Grassroots organizations known colloquially as “Villages” are emerging across the United States to help thousands of older adults continue to live in their homes.

According to a new AARP factsheet, there are 50 of these virtual communities around the country and one in Australia. Village membership concierge services help people manage their homes, transportation and personal care as they age.

Many Villages adopt a volunteer structure where members and community volunteers organize to provide assistance with projects ranging from yard work and snow shoveling to computer set up and troubleshooting.

“Nine out of 10 older Americans want to stay in their homes for as long as possible and the Village movement is capturing the imagination of the Boomers that organized babysitting co-ops in the 60s and 70s. Only now, they are organizing services for themselves that will allow them to continue to live comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Elinor Ginzler, AARP senior vice president for livable communities.

According to an AARP survey, the way a Village functions should be determined by what the inhabitants want and the structure should be open to change. Members report one of the most value aspects is the sense of community the Village fosters.

The Village concept is likely to be just one of many new approaches to making communities more livable in the next 30 years, Ginzler notes.

Seniors want to be in their homes where they have been comfortably living for much of their lives. This new Village Community concept is just one of the many options for seniors to stay in their homes. There is nothing more important than living in a familiar place, and that is just what these communities aim to do. Even if older adults are not able to be part of these communities, there is Home Instead Senior Care to take their place and perform all of the described functions, and even more.
